Do small law firms need a marketing agency, or can they rely on referrals?

Referrals alone cap growth, and most people now check a firm's Google reviews and website before ever following up on a referral — a weak online presence quietly loses referred leads too, not just cold ones. For a small firm, the realistic value is usually a credible, fast website and solid local SEO rather than paid ads, which are expensive per click in legal.

This page describes general marketing practice, not legal advice. Lawyer advertising is regulated by each state's bar, so check your state's rules before running any campaign.

Referred leads still audit you

The assumption behind "we don't need marketing, we get referrals" is that a referral arrives pre-sold. It doesn't. The referred person searches the firm name, lands on the website, reads a few reviews, and decides whether the recommendation holds up. A dated site loses some of those quietly — there's no enquiry to tell you it happened. 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, and 47% say they won't consider one with fewer than 20 reviews — thresholds a referral does not exempt you from.

Why paid search is a difficult first move

Legal is among the most expensive categories in paid search, and a small firm bidding against national lead-generation companies usually loses on budget before it loses on message. That doesn't make it wrong forever, but it's rarely the right first pound. Credibility and local search generally return more at that stage.

What to fix in order

A site that loads fast and states your practice areas and location plainly. A complete Google Business Profile. A deliberate approach to reviews. Content that answers the questions clients actually ask before they call. Those four are cheap relative to retainer advertising and they keep working between campaigns.
