Short answer: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so AI assistants — ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Google's AI Overviews — can find, understand, and quote it when someone asks a question. SEO competes for a ranking position. AEO competes to be the source of the answer.

Why this is now a separate discipline

When someone searched five years ago, they got a list and chose from it. Increasingly they get one synthesised answer and never see the list at all.

That changes what winning means. In classic search, position three on page one is a good outcome. In an AI answer, there is no position three — you are either named as a source or you are absent. The traffic doesn't split gently; it concentrates.

How AEO and SEO differ

They overlap heavily, but the emphasis shifts:

Traditional SEOAnswer Engine Optimization
GoalRank in a listBe cited in an answer
Unit of contentThe pageThe passage
RewardsAuthority, links, keywordsClarity, structure, factual precision
Measured byRankings, clicksMentions, citations, referral traffic from AI tools

undefined The good news for small businesses: AEO rewards being clear more than it rewards being big. A precise, well-structured answer from a small site can be quoted ahead of a vague one from a large brand.

What actually makes content quotable

Answer the question in the first two sentences. Models extract passages. If your answer arrives in paragraph seven after a preamble about how the industry is changing, it won't be found.

Use the question as the heading. Headings phrased as real questions map directly onto how people ask them.

State facts plainly. "We open at 8am Monday to Friday" is extractable. "Our doors open bright and early to serve you" is not.

Add structured data. Schema.org markup tells a machine explicitly what a page is, what your business does, where it operates, and what an FAQ answer is. This is the single most skipped step.

Be consistent everywhere. Your name, address, hours, and services should match across your site, Google Business Profile, and any directory listing. Contradictory information makes a model less confident in citing you at all.

Include a short FAQ. Direct question-and-answer pairs are the easiest format for an answer engine to lift cleanly.

What hasn't changed

AEO doesn't replace SEO. Fast, crawlable, mobile-friendly pages with genuine authority still matter — answer engines largely draw from sources that already perform well in conventional search. AEO is a layer on top, not a substitute.

Anyone selling AEO as a replacement for SEO is selling you half a strategy.

Common questions

Can I measure AEO?

Partially. You can track referral traffic from AI tools, and you can periodically ask the major assistants questions in your category and record whether you're mentioned. It's less precise than rank tracking, and anyone claiming exact AEO metrics is overstating what's currently measurable.

Does it work for local businesses?

Particularly well. Local queries are factual — hours, location, services, price range — and factual content is what answer engines handle most confidently. A complete, consistent Google Business Profile does a lot of the work.

How long does it take?

Structural fixes — schema, clear answers, FAQ formatting — can be picked up within weeks. Building the underlying authority that makes a model trust you takes as long as SEO always has.

Where should a small business start?

Three things, in order: add schema markup, rewrite your homepage so it states what you do in the first two sentences, and make sure your business details are identical everywhere they appear.
